We have many distractions that hopefully allow patients to relax during
procedures. At the Center for Family & Cosmetic Dentistry in Columbus,
Ohio, we have 3-D glasses and video that allows patients to watch a
movie and/or listen to a music CD during treatment. The dental
operatories are also equipped with massage chairs that are heated for
added comfort.
Nitrous oxide
When patients are anxious or if relaxation techniques fail, Dr.
Firouzian may use nitrous oxide to help you relax. Nitrous oxide is a
commonly used dental sedative that produces a giddiness or euphoria,
which is why people frequently call it "laughing gas." A sweet-smelling
gas, nitrous oxide is a compound of nitrogen and oxygen. It is inhaled,
along with oxygen, through a nasal mask. Nitrous oxide is often used
along with local anesthetics and pain medications. It has the effect of
raising the pain threshold and may even make the time appear to pass
quickly.
Local Anesthetic
By far, this is the most common form of anesthetic. You will receive a
nearly painless injection of an anesthetic, which can last from one to
six hours, depending on the length and type of procedure. There are
virtually no side effects.
Sedatives
If you are very anxious or nervous about oral treatment, please ask Dr.
Firouzian about pre-medication. This medication is provided to you about
half an hour before the treatment begins. You should plan to arrive half
an hour early and have someone present to drive you home later.
Emergency Appointments
All patients who telephone us with immediate problems will be given the
opportunity to see Dr. Firouzian within the same day. However, due to
time constraints, most patients will receive an emergency consultation
or exam with Dr. Firouzian and the pain will be addressed. In most
circumstances, a future appointment will be scheduled to complete your
dental care. In the event an emergency occurs after hours, Dr. Firouzian
may be paged by calling the office number. This service is available to
patients of record.
